WBOC Owner Dies After Cycling Mishap - 9/8 - Thomas Draper, 76, who owned Salisbury's Channel 16/WBOC, died early Friday, September 8, from injuries he sustained in a Thursday morning collision with a truck on a two-lane Delaware road. Delaware State Police say that Draper of Milford was bicycling on Slaughter Beach Road near his home at about 7:30 AM September 7 when his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 37-year-old Lewes man. Draper was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Police said drug and alcohol use do not appear to be a factor in the crash, and no charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon. WBOC is the Eastern Shore's CBS-Fox affiliate. More at wbal.com. Bradley & Palmer Celebrate 5 Years At GMD - 8/22 - Rehoboth Beach talker WGMD, 92.7, celebrates the five-year anniversary of morning talk show host Mike Bradley and Walt Palmer, the station's director of broadcast operations, engineering and programming. Bradley has spent 14 years in the radio business, most of it on the Eastern Shore and in the Baltimore area. Next year, Palmer will observe 50 years in the regional radio-TV industry. He's a veteran of DC's Channel 5/WTTG and ABC's Washington news bureau. WGMD recently enjoyed a third place ranker in the Salisbury/Ocean City market.....

New GM For WESM - 8/18 - WESM, 91.3, the public radio jazz station in Princess Anne has hired a new general manager, Gerry Weston. He was general manager of Delmarva Public Radio, which runs classical WSCL, 89.5, and news talker WSDL, 90.7, in Salisbury. More at wesm913.org.....

Jake Smith Returns To WGMD - 8/15 - This week, Jake Smith is doing fill-in work during late mornings on Rehoboth Beach talker WGMD, 92.7. In 2015, he got bounced from the station, which tied for third in the just-out Salisbury/Ocean City market radio ratings, after he refused to agree that he would not repeat how he handled a caller upset about his views on Muslims and their connections to terrorism. "As far as I'm concerned, not every Muslim is guilty, but every Muslim is suspect," Smith reportedly said, while also uttering the term "jackass," according to delawarebusinessnow.com.....

Adams Make More Cuts & Changes in Salisbury - 8/3 - DCRTV hears that the axe is falling again at Adams Radio Group in Salisbury. This time around, WZBH/WGBG, 93.5 The Beach Program Director Johnny Maze and WOCQ, OC104 Program Director/Operations Manager/PM Driver Albie Dee get pink slips as the twice-annual Eastern Shore radio ratings come out. Look for more firings soon, we're told. More: Radio Insight tells us that Adams has appointed new program directors for four of its five stations in the Salisbury/Ocean City market. The one remaining program director, Larry "Big Red" Stephens, has been promoted to operations manager for the cluster and adds program duties for Kool 104.3/105.1 to his existing position as program director/PM driver at K107.7, WKHI. Midday hosts Stacy "Carolina" Gantt at WZBH and Rob "Rob Jay" Johnson at WOCQ are promoted to the program director position at their respective stations. Laura Lee, cluster promotions director and midday host at Big 98.5, WGBG, adds program director duties at that station.....

Rodney Baylous To 88.7 The Bridge - 6/13 - Rodney Baylous, a longtime radio personality on the old Joy 102.5, WOLC (now hot adult contemporary WBOC-FM), joins the staff of Christian contemporary WKNZ as midday host. Baylous will be on the air weekdays from 10 AM to 2 PM, originating his broadcasts from Pocomoke City. WKNZ, 88.7 The Bridge, has been serving Southern Delaware and New Jersey since 2010 from studios in Milford DE and transmitting facilities in Harrington DE. The non-profit ministry recently acquired 92.5, WICO-FM, licensed to Pocomoke.....

Albie Dee Expands Presence In Salisbury - 5/25 - DCRTV hears that DC and Baltimore radio veteran Albie Dee has been promoted to the position of operations manager of Adams Radio Group's Salisbury/Ocean City cluster. Delaware 1059 Makes News Cuts - 4/28 - DCRTV hears: "Delmarva Broadcasting pulls the plug on local news at Delaware 1059 [WXDE in Lewes]. They let go morning newscaster Kelli Steele and News Director Mark Fowser. Shorter newscast, no local before the top of the hour, and 'cast recorded in Wilmington at WDEL. Previously they dropped a local 9 AM-noon show in Wilmington, and put Susan Monday on 'statewide' 9 AM-noon, and Rick Jensen 1 PM-4 PM 'statewide.' Will they drop Matt Monks 3 PM-7 PM for WDEL's 'Afternoon News'?" WXDE has been running news talk since September 2012.....

WCTG Deals Falls Through - 4/27 - DCRTV hears that the deal, announced earlier this year, to buy the Eastern Shore's adult hits WCTG by Twin Islands Media Group has fallen through. The station will continue to be managed Greg Bojko. It's owner remains A. Wray Fitch, who owns Sebago Broadcasting and Jackman Holdings. Fitch also owns DC area Spanish outlet WDCN, 87.7, as Signal Above Media. Earlier this year, Twin Islands announced that it was paying $335,000 to buy WCTG, 96.5, and country Wow 101.5, WOWZ, in Chincoteague VA. Twin Islands' principals include veteran DC area radio programmer Chris Roth.....

New Oldies Outlet In Salisbury - 4/6 - Adams Radio in Salisbury launches a "Kool" oldies station. Via two HD Radio-fed translator - W282AW in Salisbury on 104.3 and W268BB from Ocean Pines on 105.1. They're supplied by an HD Radio signal from WOCQ-HD2 from Berlin on 103.9.....

More On Eastern Shore Sale - 3/20 - From Tom Taylor Now: Price for two Chincoteague, Virginia FMs is $335,000, in the deal where communications attorney/station owner Wray sells a couple of FMs on the Delmarva Peninsula and leases out a Channel 6 low power TV station, all to Twin Island Media Group. The LPTV is WDCO-LP Salisbury. The Class A radio facilities being sold are variety hits WCTG at 96.5, and country “Wow 101.5” WOWZ. The FCC filing adds the prices - $225,000 cash for WCTG, and a $110,000 cash-and-seller note deal for “Wow 101.5.” Twin Island Media (Chris Roth, Josh Bohn, Dana Ryan Bohn) will put down $25,000 cash for WOW and pay the rest in a ten-year note with a balloon payment in 2027. Josh Bohn has a 20% interest through Focus Radio Communications in several Alabama stations, such as Huntsville’s “Talk radio for real life” WKTI/1450 and a translator at 92.9.....

WGMD To Carry Weekend Orioles Games - 3/3 - Down Eastern Shore way. Rehoboth Beach news-talk outlet WGMD, 92.7, will now be carrying Baltimore Orioles baseball on both Saturdays and Sundays. Last year, the station only carried Sunday afternoon games. In addition, WGMD will once again be the Delmarva FM affiliate of Baltimore Ravens football this year.....

WKTT Drops Country For Urban - 2/27 - From Radio Insight: Following its announced acquisition of Cat Country 97.5, WKTT, Salisbury from Rothschild Broadcasting earlier this month, RoJo Broadcasting will flip the station to urban contemporary on March 1. The new Live 97.5 will feature the syndicated "Breakfast Club" in mornings and co-owner Ron Banks hosting nights. Banks most recently served as music director and night personalit on urban contemporary Power 101.7, WZEB, Ocean View DE that also serves the Salisbury/Ocean City market.....

Roth Buys Eastern Shore Stations - 2/24 - DC radio veteran Chris Roth is part of a group, Twin Islands Media, that has purchased a batch of radio stations in Chincoteague VA, on the Eastern Shore. They are classic hits WCTG, 96.5, and country WOWZ, 101.5. The group will also take control of WDCO, 87.7, which relays WOWZ, as of April 1. Currently, Roth is program director at Salem's WAVA-FM, 105.1, in Arlington. More at radioinsight.com.....

Paul Burton Joins Adams Radio - 2/7 - Adams Radio Group has named Paul Burton as vice president and general manager for its Salisbury-Ocean City radio cluster. He started his radio career in 1987 in Baltimore with WCBM. Later, he worked for WBAL-AM and Radio One. Most recently, Burton has been working for iHeart where he was vice president of ad sales for its Salisbury radio cluster through October 2016.....

WQHQ Tops Salisbury-Ocean City - 1/23 - The latest radio ratings for the Eastern Shore. Salisbury-Ocean City makes iHeart's adult contemporary Q105, WQHQ, number one for the first time since the fall of 2011. iHeart's also number two and number three with country Froggy WWFG and urban adult contemporary WSBY. Adams Radio is in fourth and fifth places with its rock 93.5 The Beach, WZBH, and rhythmic WOCQ. Delmarva's classic hits Wave, WAVD, is off. The only two talk-based stations are Delmarva's news/talk WXDE and sister talker WICO, a no-show a year ago, a 1.0 in last spring, and a 1.5 now. According to Tom Taylor Now.....

WGMD Does New Deal For Orioles - 12/17 - On the Eastern Shore: Rehoboth Beach news talker WGMD, 92.7, has inked a deal to air 26 Orioles Sunday games in 2017. The first game will air April 9th as the Orioles host AL East foe the New York Yankees. WGMD also broadcasts Baltimore Ravens football as well.....

WBOC Buys LPTVer - 12/15 - Eastern Shore-Maryland TV owner Draper Communications last year returned to the radio business when it bought then-religious WOLC, 102.5, licensed to Princess Anne. Draper converted it to adult contemporary WBOC-FM. Now Draper, owner of Channel 16/WBOC and its multicast "Fox 21" service, buys low-power TVer W42EI, channel 42, licensed to Georgetown DE. The seller is NJ-based Engle Broadcasting. Price - $35,000.....
